Breast Revision in Fort Lauderdale, FL

Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. F. Leigh Phillips, III, PA, FACS is Coral Springs, Fort Lauderdale and South Florida’s Source for Plastic Surgery and the Ultimate in Non-Surgical Aesthetic Enhancements, including breast revision.

Making the decision to have breast revision surgery, or reshaping, is not one to be taken lightly. Patients have to weigh the benefits and risks, and a big part of the decision should be based on the experience and judgment of the plastic surgeon. One of the primary reasons for a reshaping surgery is an immune system response called capsular contracture. This is a condition that occurs when the fibrous capsule surrounding a breast implant tightens and/or thickens, causing excessive firmness and distortion of the breast shape. In advanced states, breasts may become painful. Approximately 15 to 20 percent of women who have breast augmentation surgery experience capsular contracture; the figure is slightly higher (over 20 percent) for breast reconstruction patients.

The amount of breast tissue you have and the previous surgery that you’ve had with the augmentation will dictate whether you will undergo a capsulectomy, which is the removal of scar tissue, or a capsulotomy, which is the release of the scar tissue. In some instances, components of both procedures are recommended, and it should be discussed thoroughly with the physician to determine the best option for you.

Capsular contracture can occur at any time after breast implants are placed, but most commonly occurs during the first few months after surgery. For patients affected by this condition, the tissue capsule tightens and/or thickens, constricting the implant and distorting its shape. Patients experiencing contracture sometimes believe that their implants have hardened, but this is not the case. Once the implant is released form the breast tissue capsule, it is as soft as it was before placement.

Another procedure commonly known as capsulorrhaphy is a predictable and effective method of re-contouring the shape and size of the pocket in which the implant lies. This unique and intricate pocket suturing technique results in a more natural and overall better appearance of the breast. This technique can be likened to how popular underwire, padded, and gel-filled bras are used to help breasts appear fuller and bigger or to create more cleavage.
