Skin Cancer Treatments in Fort Lauderdale, FL

Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. F. Leigh Phillips, III, PA, FACS is Coral Springs, Fort Lauderdale and South Florida’s Source for Plastic Surgery and the Ultimate in Non-Surgical Aesthetic Enhancements, including skin cancer treatments.

Florida is known for sunshine and warm weather, and as a result, Dr. F. Leigh Phillips, III, PA, FACS provides skin cancer treatments.  Skin cancer has become the most common type of cancer in the United States, and the condition affects people of all ages.

Risk Factors for Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is caused by prolonged exposure to the sun.  While sunbathing is most commonly associated with skin cancer, outdoor activities such as hiking and walking along the beach also put you at risk.  Other risk factors include being fair-skinned with blonde or red hair, having a history of severe sunburns, using tanning booths, and having freckles or blue or green eyes.

Treatment Options Offered by Dr. Phillips

After your skin cancer diagnosis, there are many options for treatment.  Dr. Phillips may recommend one treatment or a combination of treatments, depending on your individual case.  Treatments may involve removing the damaged layers of your skin through chemical peels, or removing cancerous growths through a procedure known as cryosurgery. Cryosurgery is the application of extreme cold to destroy abnormal or diseased tissue. Cryosurgery works by taking advantage of the destructive force of freezing temperatures on cells. At low temperatures, ice crystals form inside the cells, which can tear them apart. More damage occurs when blood vessels supplying the diseased tissue freeze. In some cases, Dr. Phillips may recommend a topical chemotherapy lotion.

Excision of Skin Lesions

Typically, you may have already been seen and biopsied by your dermatologist prior to coming here for consultation. Options at this point may be excision of the skin cancer and immediate reconstruction by Dr. Phillips or excision by a Moh’s dermatologist followed by closure of the wound by Dr. Phillips. In either situation, the procedure is usually done under local anesthesia in the office. However, if it is more extensive and requires skin grafts, this is done in the hospital under IV sedation (twilight) anesthesia. In most all situations, this is an outpatient procedure with the sutures (stitches) being removed in one week. The exact treatment is individualized for your particular needs and is determined at the consultation.
