Skin Cancer Removal in Fort Lauderdale, FL

Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. F. Leigh Phillips, III, PA, FACS is Coral Springs, Fort Lauderdale and South Florida’s Source for Plastic Surgery and the Ultimate in Non-Surgical Aesthetic Enhancements, including skin cancer removal.

Excessive exposure to sunlight can make you more susceptible to skin cancer.  The best method is to protect yourself from high levels of ultraviolet light, including tanning beds.  Early detection is critical in treating skin cancer.  Dr. Phillips recommends a monthly self-examine to his patients in Coral Springs and Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  Any suspicious lesions should be evaluated by a physician.  If you have been diagnosed with skin cancer, contact Dr. Phillips to schedule an appointment for skin cancer removal.

Types of Skin Cancer

Without proper treatment, skin cancer can spread to other tissues, including internal organs.  The five types of skin cancer are actinic keratosis, basal cell carcinoma, dysplastic nevi, melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma.  Of these, melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer.  Melanoma typically has an asymmetrical shape with an uneven border.  This type of cancer typically shows as multiple colors, including brown, tan and black, with a diameter that is approximately the size of a pencil eraser.  As melanoma progresses, the lesion changes in size, shape, color and diameter.

Skin Cancer Removal

In most cases, the first step in skin cancer removal is surgery.  For non-melanoma types of cancer, Dr. Phillips may remove the lesion in layers, and check each layer for cancer cells.  Skin cancer removal for melanoma requires the lesion to be excised, or cut, from the skin.  Other skin cancer removal techniques recommended by Dr. Phillips include curettage, where a special instrument is used to scrape the cancerous cells, and electrosurgery that destroys any remaining cancer cells.
