Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. F. Leigh Phillips, III, PA, FACS is Coral Springs, Fort Lauderdale and South Florida’s Source for Plastic Surgery and the Ultimate in Non-Surgical Aesthetic Enhancements, including rhinoplasty.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping, is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures. Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of your nose, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle between your nose and your upper lip. While it can certainly enhance the appearance and self-confidence of an individual, it can also be performed to meet aesthetic goals or for reconstructive purposes such as correcting birth defects or breathing problems.

The Rhinoplasty Consultation

During your initial consultation at his Coral Springs office, Dr. Phillips will be very specific with his questions as to what you would like your nose to look like, and he will evaluate the structure of your nose and face. Dr. Phillips will also explain the factors that can influence the procedure, such as the structure of your nasal bones and cartilage, and the shape and thickness of your skin and face. Nose reshaping be performed in Dr. Phillips’ in-office surgical suite or at a hospital and is usually done as an outpatient procedure.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty usually takes about one to two hours, but more complicated procedures may take longer. During nose reshaping, the skin of the nose is separated from its supporting framework of bone and cartilage and is then sculpted to the desired shape. The nature of the sculpting will depend on the look and technique that were discussed prior to the surgery, and after the work is in place, the skin is then re-draped over the new framework.

Dr. Phillips often performs rhinoplasty from within the nose, making incisions inside the nostrils. In more complicated cases, however, an “open” procedure is performed in which a small incision is made across the columella, the vertical strip of tissue separating the nostrils. When the surgery is complete, Dr. Phillips will apply a splint to help your nose maintain its new shape. Nasal packs or soft plastic splints may also be placed in your nostrils to stabilize the septum, the dividing wall between the air passages

After Your Rhinoplasty

Most Coral Springs and Fort Lauderdale rhinoplasty patients are up and about within two days, and are able to return to school or sedentary work a week or so following surgery. It will be several weeks, however, before you are entirely up to speed. Dr. Phillips will give you more specific guidelines for gradually resuming your normal activities.
